Longtime boxing referee Eddie Cotton dies from COVID-19.

Longtime boxing referee Eddie Cotton died on this Friday morning, April 17, 2020. He was 72 years old. The cause of death was pneumonia. Cotton was hospitalized two weeks ago and that’s where he was diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus. Cotton is a Paterson, New Jersey native who enjoyed a boxing referee career that lasted for 22 years.

Cotton refereed a lot of great fights, but he was most known for being the referee for one of the most anticipated heavyweight fights in boxing history. That fight was Lennox ‘The Lion’ Lewis vs. ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson which took place back on June 8, 2002.

Before his death, Cotton served as a member of the IBF Board of Directors. He is survived by his wife and two children. Cotton was a well-respected referee and figure in the boxing world that will be truly missed.
