Can any new school fighter beat a primed Roy Jones, Jr.?

Roy Jones, Jr. is one of the best Pound 4 Pound fighters in boxing history. He held world titles in 4 different weight divisions, and in the late 1990s, it was no question as to who the #1 Pound 4 Pound fighter in the sport of boxing was.

In his prime, Jones dominated at middleweight, super-middleweight, and most of his stint at light-heavyweight. On March 1, 2003, Jones moved up to heavyweight and captured the WBA heavyweight title when he defeated John ‘The Quiet Man’ Ruiz.

Jones’s elusiveness and unbelievable reflexes wowed the boxing world for years on end. Jones was so elusive, that in the 4th round of his fight against Vinny ‘The Pazmanian Devil’ Pazienza back on June 24, 1995, Pazienza did not lay a glove on him in that round.

Roy Jones, Jr. became the 1st fighter in CompuBox history to go an entire round without getting hit by his opponent. That’s incredible! There was also a fight where Jones’s elusiveness and reflexes reared its head again.

It was a light-heavyweight title fight back on February 2, 2002, against then-undefeated contender Glen ‘Kunga’ Kelly. In the 7th round of that fight, Jones got so bored with the lack of action that Kelly was bringing in the ring that he put his hands behind his back to invite Kelly to try and hit him.

When Kelly went in to try to hit Jones, he knocked Kelly out with a counter right hook. Fight over! Roy Jones, Jr. is arguably the most athletic fighter of his generation. When Jones was “RJ,” he was unstoppable.

The new generation has a lot of great fighters right now in the divisions where Roy Jones, Jr. reigned supreme. Fighters like Canelo Alvarez, Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade, Jermall ‘Hitman’ Charlo, Artur Beterbiev, Dmitry Bivol, Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin, and Callum ‘Mundo’ Smith are all fighters who are on their way to International Boxing Hall of Fame status.

Okay, so here is the topic of the day Boxing World. If you drop a primed Roy Jones, Jr. into the new school mix of fighters today, which new school fighter, if any, could beat a primed Roy Jones, Jr.

Leave a comment at the bottom of this post. (Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford and Errol ‘The Truth Spence, Jr. was not included in this new school debate given that they would be too small to take on the great Roy Jones, Jr. at this present time.)
