Where does Sergey Kovalev go from here?

On Saturday, August 4, 2018, Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev found himself in the ring with a young and hungry rising prospect in the light-heavyweight division. Eleider ‘Storm’ Alvarez was not taking no for an answer to losing the fight with Kovalev. He took a lot of punishment from Kovalev in this fight and just kept on coming. Kovalev hit Alvarez with everything. Jabs, hard hooks to the body and head, uppercuts. Alvarez kept on coming.

As the fight went into deep waters, Kovalev started to slow down which gave Alvarez a chance to get back into the fight. Well, the boxing world was not expecting what happened next. In round 7, fatigue reared its ugly head on Kovalev and this allowed for Alvarez to take advantage in a big way. Alvarez caught Kovalev with a big overhand right that sent Kovalev crashing to the canvas.  Kovalev beat the 10 count but was clearly still in deep trouble.

Alvarez poured on more punishment and caught Kovalev with a left and right hook that sent Kovalev back to the canvas in the 7th. Kovalev got up one last time. Finally, as round 7 was coming down the stretch, Alvarez caught Kovalev with another big right-hand shot that sent Kovalev down to the canvas for good. The referee stopped the fight, and Eleider ‘Storm’ Alvarez was awarded the 7th round TKO victory. With the win, Alvarez is the new WBO light-heavyweight champion of the world.

Conclusion

At one time, Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev was in contention to be the best Pound 4 Pound Fighter in the sport. He was actually one Andre ‘S.O.G.’ Ward stoppage away from becoming #1 in the sport, but could not finish the deal. Now the light-heavyweight division has caught up to Kovalev as for before the competition was good, but Kovalev was just better than everyone at 175, (Except Andre Ward.)

The current landscape the light-heavyweight division is hungry! Eleider Alvarez has a long way to go as there are other hungry fighters waiting to move in on his newly acquired WBO light-heavyweight title. Fighters like Badou Jack ‘The Ripper’, Dmitry Bivol, Oleksandr ‘The Nail’ Gvozdyk, and ‘Sir’ Marcus Browne are just a few names in the light-heavyweight division waiting to take the division by storm.
