Golovkin defended his middleweight titles through sheer steamrolling his opponents. Hopkins, on the other hand, played chess with his opponents by wearing them down with smart boxing and good old fashion “ring generalship.”
Hopkins made boxing history in the middleweight division back on February 19, 2005, when at age 40; he defeated Howard ‘The Battersea Bomber’ Eastman by 12th round unanimous decision victory. With the win, Hopkins had successfully defended his middleweight titles a record 20 times.
This was a record a lot of the boxing world felt may not ever get broken.
Well, Hopkins’ middleweight title defense record did not get broken, but it was tied by none other than Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin.
On May 5, 2018, Golovkin steamrolled through Vanes ‘The Nightmare’ Martirosyan by knocking him out in stunning fashion in the 2nd round to get the KO victory. With the win, Golovkin successfully made the 20th defense of his middleweight titles.
Golovkin was going for the all-time middleweight title defense record after his fight with Martirosyan but came up short as he lost his middleweight titles to Canelo Alvarez in their rematch on September 15, 2018. In a dream match featuring these 2 great champions, Golovkin would be the bull, and Hopkins would be the matador.
