Heading into the 11th round it was anybody’s fight. The game plans of both fighters were working to a tee. In that same 11th round, however, things changed drastically for Kovalev. In the 11th round, Kovalev and Canelo were in the clinch and Canelo landed a chopping right hand that shook Kovalev.

Canelo followed up the right hand with a crushing left hook that wobbled Kovalev. After that, Canelo closed the show with a vicious right cross that sent Kovalev crashing to the canvas. The referee immediately stopped the fight, and just like that, Canelo Alvarez was awarded the 11th round KO victory.

With the win, Canelo captured the WBO light-heavyweight title, and he is now a 4-division world champion!

Conclusion

Sergey Kovalev is on the downside of his professional boxing career. With that said, he is still a dangerous fighter so Canelo knocking him out was impressive. The light-heavyweight division may not be the right division for Canelo though. Kovalev was just right for Canelo, but there are other killers at light-heavyweight like Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol that may be too much for Canelo.

Should Canelo stay at light-heavyweight or should he go back down to super-middleweight? Heck, maybe even middleweight? Who knows? Canelo stated in the post-fight interview that he will wait to decide which road he is going to take as far as his next fight goes.
