In 1983, Hagler added to his middleweight title collection when he captured the IBF middleweight title. He would go on to defend his middleweight titles 12 times from 1980 up until 1987. Hagler fought great fighters such as ‘Hands of Stone’ Roberto Duran, Thomas ‘The Hitman’ Hearns, and ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard.

He defeated Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns. His fight with Thomas Hearns in 1985 is still considered one of the best action-packed fights in boxing history and that fight only lasted 3 rounds. In 1987, Hagler lost a controversial 12th round split-decision victory to Ray Leonard.

The loss was so controversial, that Hearns retired from boxing, never to put on a pair of boxing gloves again. Every time you watch Hearns vs. Leonard, you can argue that Leonard won the fight, and you can also argue that Hearns won too. After his professional boxing career, Hearns went on to pursue a successful acting career in Italy.

In 1993, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Hearns will always be remembered as the fighter who took on all comers who stood in his way. He will always be a boxing treasure to the boxing world. He will truly be missed.
