Can Jarrett ‘Swift’ Hurd clean out the junior middleweight division?

On Saturday, April 7, 2018, Jarrett ‘Swift’ Hurd used his unbelievable pressure to wear down ‘The American Dream’ Erislandy Lara. Lara surprised a lot of the boxing world by staying in the pocket with Hurd throughout the fight which spelled doom for him late.  Lara was able to land some good counterpunches on Hurd in this fight. As this great fight moved on, however, the body punching, and punishment dealt out by Hurd would prove to be too much for the fading Lara.

As the fight was heading into the final round, the fight was super close. Lara did great work in the early rounds, and Hurd did great work in the late rounds. It was all about Lara trying to survive the 12th round given the beating he was taking from Hurd.  In the 12th round, Hurd’s unbelievable pressure got the best of Lara as in this exciting war of attrition that took place in the 12th, Hurd caught Lara with a solid left-hand shot that sent him to the canvas. Lara courageously got up from the left-hand shot and fought hard, but Hurd closed the final round big with a barrage of power shots.

This great fight went the judges’ scorecards! Judge Burt A. Clements scored the bout 114-113 for Lara, and Judges Glenn Feldman and Dave Moretti scored the bout 114-113 for the winner and New Unified IBF and WBA junior middleweight champion of the world Jarrett ‘Swift’ Hurd.

Conclusion

Jarrett ‘Swift’ Hurd gets a lot of credit for doing what he needed to do to walk out of the Hard Rock Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada with the IBF and WBA junior middleweight straps. He brought the fight to Lara and left everything in the ring.  Lara surprisingly did not box Hurd on the outside and it costs him. He did a great job in the early rounds of staying in the pocket with Hurd, but it allowed Hurd to beat his arms and shoulders which prove to wear him down late.

Lara was the best at 154 lbs. in a lot of the boxing world’s eyes. With that said, now that Erislandy Lara is in Jarrett Hurd’s rear view, can Hurd clean out the junior middleweight division?
